The “Prancing Pony” Burns
as Bree is Sacked!
Letter #1 from the Steward of Bree
Sire, how
is it possible that an army of the King’s
men has marched by the free town of Bree and not stand
and help your few remaining subjects in its defense?
Since the recent plague, we are too few in numbers to
hold against any effort by hostile forces to take our
town.
The roads south of Bree are now traveled at will by
our traitorous cousins of Cardolan and it is rumored
that the ancient kings and warriors of the Barrow Downs
have been stirred by dark spirits and move about at night,
directed by some unseen malice directed toward us.
On behalf of your people, I beg you to abandon whatever
quest compelled your forces to move in great haste towards
Amon Sul and return to defend us. Does not Amon Sul have
a garrison of your best men to hold watch on that border
of your kingdom?
Letter #2 from the Steward of Bree
Sire! All
is lost! Barbarous raiders from Dunland have come up
from the South via “The Greenway” and
have breached our inadequate defenses. Our few survivors
have made a last stand in “The Prancing Pony”.
I now send this letter of request for aide with one of
those ranger folk that happen to be waylaid here at the
time of the attack. I hope that he can deliver it to
you in time and convince you of the need to save your
people!
Letter #3 from the Regnar, Son of Renulf, Wolfbane Clan
of Dunland
(transcribed by the Steward’s daughter)
The Doom of Arnor is upon thee! Now cometh the time
for your end at the hand of those ye have scorned and
relegated to barren hills and cold mountains without
shelter. The wind shall not cease to howl and hunt you
until the descendants of Numenor are driven back into
the sea from which they came and their subjects become
thralls to the masters of Cardolan and Dunland!
