"I
thought hiding in the squall was the safest course
of action until we
heard word from higher command." - Lt Cmdr.
Bob Campbell, Commander, USS
Barb (SS220) "Shortly
after our gun crew cheered at the hit we gave the
Jintsu, we felt a
hard pull to the port and then starboard. After that
I felt two explosions
shuddered down along our hull. I was one of the lucky
ones to get out of the
turret before we sank." - Jon Able, Gunner's
Mate 2nd Class, USS Atlanta (CL
51)
"2
US cruisers and 2 US destroyers sunk by combined
surface and submerged
torpedo fires. Sector K cleared of . . . " -
Last known transmission of Lt.
Fuji Takeda, Communications Officer, Cruiser Jintsu
"The
audacious efficiency of the boys in the torpedo
bays made up for the
lack of initiative of our skipper. The damaged Japanese
cruiser was easy
prey, but to be honest, I thought that lone Yukikaze
class destroyer was
going to out-run us to some unknown objective. I
can tell you that if it
wasn't for that lucky long range shot, the Japanese
Navy would have claimed
victory over us." - Letter to wife from Lt.
Davy Jones, XO, USS Barb (SS220)
Three
torpedos hit! The lone Japanese destroyer Yukikaze
joins the watery grave at the "Iron Bottom" Sound.
The US Navy barely wins by 3 points! What a close
game for my first full game of War at Sea.
