Lasalle Playtest 05JUN10 - Mike Pfanestiel runs a game for Charles, Tom, Mike Updike, and Mike Pike - French vs. British

After a full day of hiting the beaches of Utah and battling in Saint Mere Eglise you'd have thought we would have had enough wargaming, but no. We simply swicthed gears from WWII to Napoleonics. Mike Pfanenstiel, who has become quite the Lasallle guru, ran four other players through a game.

We used PSC's "Patch Quilt? Board with one added hill for our Battlefield. The above view is from the British base line.

The British deply a brigade on the hill and to the left "commanded" by Tom, while Charles anchors the British right to some woods and a small village.

The French right played by Mike Updike.

The French center and far left, Light Cavalry Division commanded by Mike Pike.

How many Mike's can you have? Mike Pfanestiel explains rules to the "newbies" Mike Pike and Mike Updike. "Doc" on the far right is intently studying the French battleline.

Tom and Charles, the British team, are confident in their defensive position and the quality of their troops.

The French try to maneuver against the British right through and around a large wood. "Indulge it...anything to waste time" replies the British Commander.

Mike Pike's French light cavalry get around the woods and position themselves for a move on the British right flank, but Charles Christy's troops take appropriate precautions and form square.

On the inner edge of the Woods, Charles Christy's left most unit repulses the first French charge.

On the extreme British left, Tom tries to sneak two battalions around and behind the French main line.

Meanwhile, Charles is pressed hard on the British extreme right. The guns end up being lost, but Charles’s infantry square holds firm and repulses a French infantry battalion looking to take advantage of the squares inherent disadvantage against foot troops.

Charles's infantry continues to keep Mike Pike's numerically superior forces bottled up and buys the British enough time for their Cavalry reserve to arrive!

Unfortunately, we only got to turn 12 just as we reached 9pm, PSC closing time. So we did not get to the minimum 16 turn limit. The battle was very much up in the air when we concluded but with the British Dragoons and Hussars arriving, the French bottleneck continuing on the British right, and Tom's turning action on the British left just starting to come into play it appeared that the British were likely to hold on to their position at the end of the day.

It was interesting seeing more units (two support brigades per side) and more players involved in a Lasalle game. We really have not seen Cavalry really get in to it yet with these rules even in this game despite having a brigade of cavalry on each side in this game. Lasalle is definitely a game where you have to make shooting a supporting effort to assaulting. It appears that the French command took too much time trying to let artillery bombardment weaken the British line and in maneuver through and around difficult terrain trying to turn the British right flank.

Good fun...thanks to Mike Pfanenstiel for walking us through the game...even if he is wrong about overall commander bonuses in combat!
